Best Swiss Internet Providers: Which Should You Choose?

best swiss internet providers

Having a good internet connection in your home is a necessity these days. Living off your mobile network alone doesn’t cut it especially if you work remotely or like watching a lot of Netflix.

If you are planning to move to Switzerland or just switching providers, one of the best things you can do is set up affordable and reliable internet at your house or apartment.

The Internet service providers in Switzerland offer a variety of subscriptions, packages and deals. This makes choosing from the various internet providers a little tricky as the internet speed prices vary quite a lot.

In this article, I will run through all the best Swiss internet providers so that you can make an informed decision and end up with the right internet service provider for years to come.

Wingo

Wingo

BLACK FRIDAY 13th - 30th November

Wingo is a part of Swisscom and benefits highly from using the Swisscom network as it has the best coverage in Switzerland.

This makes Wingo one of the most reliable mobile providers, and it’s a very affordable internet provider.

What’s Good?

Like all the other providers, Wingo also provides internet, TV, mobile, and landline all in one package. You can also get one of those, or the bundle if you prefer.

The Wingo website currently has a 10 GBps internet speed deal for just CHF 49.95 per month with a free landline. You can also add a TV for CHF 15 per month.

Some of these contracts do not have a fixed term, meaning you can cancel at any time without any fees. They can also take your old home phone number to your new address, so you don’t need to change numbers.

Both me and Ann use Wingo for our mobile phones with international roaming and have had an excellent experience with them. Both in Switzerland and abroad, which is the biggest test if you ask me. They use the Swisscom network, so the connection is fast and reliable, even outside Switzerland. Just be sure to catch them when they have a sale. You can get some great deals!

What’s Bad?

As with every internet provider in Switzerland, Wingo also has some cons. Firstly, they charge CHF 1.50 per minute for customer service calls with a maximum cost of CHF 15 per call. Although to be honest, this is not unusual in Switzerland in my experience.

Also, all the Wingo contracts are subject to change and are being updated constantly. Although, I have been using them for a couple of years and they are yet to change anything significant.

Sunrise

Sunrise Communications

Sunrise is one of the best internet providers in Switzerland offering a reliable wireless connection all over the country.

Sunrise is the second largest company in Switzerland’s mobile communications market and offers everything from the Internet, to TV and mobile phone services.

What’s Good?

Sunrise also has its own mobile network and is the second fastest of all the internet service providers in Switzerland. Together this won Sunrise an award for the best internet in Switzerland thanks to its amazing network and 5G reliability.

Sunrise offers very reasonably priced internet subscriptions from CHF 54.90 with a download speed and upload speeds of 10 Gbit/s. There is no activation fee for subscriptions and you also have the option to buy 1 Gbit/s for CHF 44.90 or 200 Mbit/s for 44.90 per month.

What’s Bad?

The cancellation fees with Sunrise are a bit extreme. If you end your subscription before the 12 or 24-month contract period you will have to pay the basic fees for the remaining months and pay a CHF 100 fee.

Also, the provided hardware such as your routers or TV box must be returned within 60 days of the contract ending. If the hardware is not returned, you can be charged CHF 100 for a wireless router or TV box, and up to CHF 250 for the Sunrise Internet Box 5G.

So, while Sunrise offers good prices, high speeds, and a reliable connection, you have to commit to the contract terms or you will be charged, and be sure to return the hardware.

Salt

Salt Mobile SA

Salt is another of the best internet providers in Switzerland and is the third largest internet service provider in Switzerland, their service is very reliable.

Salt offers mobile phone, TV, telephone, and TV services and you can buy them all from Salt, and by doing so get a loyalty discount.

What’s Good?

When it comes to value, Salt is hard to beat. You can get a 10 Gbit/s connection with unlimited landline calls in Switzerland, and 260+ TV channels for just CHF 49.50 per month, CHF 39.95 if you use Salt for your mobile too.

Another great thing about Salt is that you can get a new phone each time you renew your contract for just CHF 10 per month.

What’s Bad?

Salt’s 5G network is still being grown and therefore isn’t available all over the country at the moment, but they are working to change this.

Like the different internet providers available, Salt also has a minimum contract term of 12 – 24 months with fees if you leave early.

You must also return the Salt Fiber Box and any other equipment to the company within 30 days of the contract ending. If the equipment is broken or not returned in time, you will be charged CHF 199.

Want To Save This For Later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Swisscom is the market leader of all internet providers in Switzerland as they control a large majority of Swiss telephone lines. You can buy everything from Swisscom for your communication needs from WiFi, to TV, internet, and mobile planes.

You can either get a single internet package or one with all of their services. They also offer very high-speed internet access of up to 10 Gbit/s from which you can do most types of internet heavy work.

What’s Good?

When it comes to Broadband Internet deals, Swisscom has a number of different internet connections available.

You can opt for 100 Mbit/s, 1 Gbit/s, and 10 Gbit/s which all cost just CHF 39.90 per month for the first 6 months and then go up to CHF 54.90, 69.90, and 79.90 respectively. The subscriptions last 24 months and have an activation fee of CHF 59.

You can also opt for a TV, phone, mobile, and internet package so everything is in one to make life a lot simpler.

Swisscom is one of the only providers that offer web hosting packages that include email accounts, databases, storage, backups, and more.

What’s Bad?

You always have to pay a connection/activation fee with Swisscom, there is no way around this. I guess it is how they make up for the first 6 months of discount they offer with their internet package.

You should also know that you do not get a symmetrical connection with Swisscom internet service. This means you can download at say 10 Gbit/s but your upload speeds will be much lower than this unless you pay an extra fee.

Yallo

Yallo

Yallo is a part of Sunrise, as I already mentioned and they offer both cable connections and mobile internet connections in the form of a 5G box.

Yallo runs its services on the Sunrise network but offers very different contracts and pricing compared to the other internet providers in Switzerland.

By using Sunrise’s super reliable network, Yallo can offer reliable internet in Switzerland without any worries.

What’s Good?

Apart from being reliable, Yallo might be the most affordable internet provider in Switzerland. They currently have an offer for CHF 39 per month for 1 Gbit/s for a 24-month contract. You can also include cable TV for CHF 44 per month or get the Home 5G for 39 CHF per month.

You can also choose from packages that include a phone, TV, and landline altogether. Yallo is a great option if you are looking for a great deal on your internet package.

What’s Bad?

Yallo doesn’t provide the most reliable internet in Switzerland since they do not have their own network and use Sunrise instead. But, the reliability of the connection and internet speed is dependent on the area you live in.

You can check by putting your address on the Yallo website to see what services and internet speeds they offer in your area.

UPC

UPC

UPC is an internet provider that is owned by Liberty Global and operates on the Sunrise network infrastructure. They have more than 2 million users in Switzerland and are therefore the largest network operator in the country.

What’s Good?

UPC offers internet, TV, landline, and mobile services. Their network (through Sunrise) covers over 96% of the country and is incredibly reliable. Plus, their 4G+ network covers 85% of the country, and therefore this is one reliable internet provider.

What’s Good?

With UPC, you can waive the CHF 99 activation fee by booking online and their packages are quite reasonable.

You can opt for a 24-month package which includes 1 Gbit/s wired internet, 280 channels of TV, and a landline for just CHF 54.90 per month. You can upgrade to 10 Gbit/s internet and pay just CHF 64.90.

What’s Bad?

The only downsides to UPC are that they do not have a 5G network and all their packages are a minimum of 24 months.

Cheapest Internet Providers In Switzerland

There are lots of options when it comes to cheap internet providers in Switzerland. The cheapest internet provider has offers around 28-29 CHF per month from providers. This includes providers like Teleking, Teleboy or iWay.

You can find the latest deals for a cheap internet provider on Comparis.

Types of Internet Connection in Switzerland

You have the choice of mobile, fiber optic network, DSL, cable, and wireless internet connections in Switzerland.

Fiber optic and cable connections are the fastest and most expensive while wireless and mobile provide internet at a more reasonable price.

How to Choose the Best Internet Provider in Switzerland

The best way to choose the right internet provider for you is via direct internet comparison. First, decide what services and internet speeds you are happy with and search for them on an internet price comparison website.

On www.alao.ch, you can plug in all your internet preferences along with your address and it will search across all the companies to find you the best deal. Be sure to check for activation fees and cancellation fees, as these can be hidden sometimes.
