Flooding in Zermatt: Chaos for Locals & Tourists Alike

Zermatt was hit hard this weekend with serious flooding. A heavy rainstorm caused the Vispa river to partially burst its banks, leading to a whole range of problems.

Most of the flooding and damage occurred along the river’s edge, and as of today, things seem to be stabilizing.

The flooding also caused chaos for trains and cars entering the region. Some roads were closed, and train services between Zermatt and Täsch were disrupted.

This made it tough for people to get in and out of the area. Authorities were quick to respond, trying to help those affected and implementing measures to control the flooding.

The wet conditions also caused soil to soften sending a landslide onto the access road between Zermatt and nearby Tasch, around three miles away.

The whole canton of Valais has raised the threat warning level the Rhone, which the Vispa runs into, and its various tributaries. And with further rain expected on Sunday June 23rd, things are not looking great.
