A short walk from the Hardbrücke train station is a hip outdoor meeting place called Frau Gerolds Garten. It is a mixture of trendy shops, food stands and bars, with a variety of seating areas and a two-story tower to hang out on as well.
It blends well with the industrial Zuri West vibe here, with the Frietag Flagship store and tower almost leaning over the whole thing. There are shipping containers scattered throughout, with a garden mixed in between. Seats are scattered around to create an almost random feel to the place.
Winter Garden at Frau Gerolds
When I visited again just this week it was winter garden time at Frau Gerolds. Every year starting in October they convert the garden into a more covered and homely winter retreat. There are fireballs (metal balls with fire inside) and fire pits spread throughout, with open chalets and small little houses (Hüslis in Swiss German) to hang out with friends in.
The food offerings are extensive, with lots of food trucks spread throughout. Everything from tacos and burgers, to fondue and raclette. Just as you would expect in winter in Switzerland.
There are also a few bars to pick up your obligatory Gluhwein, or maybe a beer or mocktail if that is your cup of tea. There is a smaller one near the entrance, and the usual main bar at the back, where there is usually more of a line waiting for drinks to be served.
There are also some hip clothing stores that seem to have taken up permanent residence here. As well as my favorite place to get dessert – Gelateria di Berna. Epic ice cream if you are ever going to get one in Zurich!
Summer In Frau Gerolds
In summer things are a bit more open. With lots of smaller tables and umbrellas, as well as a community garden scattered around. It is a place where locals hang out on a warm summer’s night. Especially with the terrace out back, where you can maybe catch a breeze over the vast trainlines that pass through Hardbrücke.
