Chinese Garden, Zurich: Everything You Need To Know

Zurich Chinese Gardens Entrance

Located on the lakeside of Zurich at Zurichhorn, the Chinese Garden Zurich is a relaxing space to explore on a sunny day by Lake Zurich.

I had a chance to explore these Chinese Gardens late one afternoon in October and they are impressive to say the least. Highly manicured and very well-kept, there is a meandering walkway that takes you over bridges, through temple buildings and even through a rock tunnel. It is larger than it looks from the outside, but once you step inside, the magical solitude of the place will take its hold on you.

This Chinese Garden is actually a temple garden and is one of the highest-ranking gardens outside of China. Temple gardens are often surrounding Buddhist and Taoist temples in China and are one of the three main types of Chinese gardens.

But why does such a world-class Chinese Garden exist right in the middle of downtown Zurich?

The Zurich Chinese Garden was actually a thank-you gift from Zurich’s Chinese sister city Kunming. The reason for the thanks was that Zurich provided a lot of technical assistance to that city with its water supply and drainage. It was built by the city of Zurich in cooperation with experts from Kunming and was opened in the spring of 1994.

Below you will find all the details about this Chinese Garden in Zurich. It is free to enter and the opening hours are quite reasonable. So, why not take some time out if you are near the Zurichhorn and explore this special place?

What makes Chinese gardens special?

Traditional Chinese gardens are quite special because they integrate ornate buildings, art, and highly manicured gardens in one place. The buildings typically have highly decorated features amongst them and the gardens are very well-maintained.
