Unfortunately floods have hit Switzerland yet again (high five to global warming everyone!)
Below I will collect any information I can to help you navigate the Chaos and keep updated.
For now, issues appear to be entering Grindelwald and around Brienz at the end of Lake Brienz.
Table of Contents
CURRENT STATUS
- Train and Road to Grindelwald open
- Train between Lucerne and Interlaken Ost re-routed via Bern until Sept 1 (check sbb.ch/en for your options)
Damage at Brienz
Heavy damage to the Brienz train line which will affect trains between Interlaken and Lucerne and the boats on Lake Brienz as well.
They were lucky they built a dam above the town to stop a catastrophe. Even so, this train line will be down for a while I think.
Lake Brienz
Brienz cannot be reached until Sunday 18th.
All other stops are operating as normal until then.
Brienz Rothorn
According to their website
“Due to a severe storm in Brienz, the tracks of Brienz Rothorn Railway have been damaged. We therefore have to suspend operations until at least Sunday, August 18. The safety of our guests and employees is our top priority, which is why a precise assessment of the damage and any necessary repairs must be carried out before we can resume operations. “
From Grindelwald Tourism
This is what Grindelwald Tourism is advising

Train Closures and Disruptions
The SBB keeps us updated about such closures as you can see below.
You can click on this link here to see what is happening
- UNTIL 1 Sept: Interrupted service: Meiringen – Interlaken Ost (Which passes via Brienz)
Current tracks that are affected
Lucerne to Interlaken Ost
It is still possible to get between Lucerne and Interlaken, you just have to go a longer way around via Olten.
Use the SBB app or website to get your latest times and connections.
Road Closures and Disruptions
Likewise, the road to Grindelwald suffered a landslide and is currently closed.
You can see what is happening with the roads via the Swiss TCS website (albeit in german)
I have translated it for you below:
“Main road, Interlaken – Grindelwald – closed in both directions between Zweilütschinen and Grindelwald, landslide”
Brienz Rothorn is Closed
I have checked the Brienz Rothorn train and it is closed until further notice
Thanks Ashley. We arrive in Interlaken September 5. We love the Lauterbrennen Valley walk and the area above Meiringen. Also Grosse Scheddig to Grindalwald.
I’m having trouble finding info on when they expect trains to be operational again….. and even if once you reach Lauterbrunnen or Grindalwald or Meiringen they are walkable.
All very sad to think of the destruction and difficult times for people living in this area.
Hopefully you will keep posting updates.
The train to Grindelwald is back on again, and for the walks, you can zoom in on the maps on here, they show closures https://schweizmobil.ch/en/map?bgLayer=pk&detours=yes&layers=wanderland&photos=yes&logos=yes&season=summer&highlightPointCoordinates=2646198.75-1163373.25&E=2646059&N=1163373&resolution=9.36
