If you only have time for one big adventure while visiting Lucerne, it should definitely be the Golden Round Trip to Mount Pilatus.
This unforgettable journey combines every kind of Swiss transport you can dream of
- a lake cruise
- the world’s steepest cogwheel train
- breathtaking mountain panoramas
- soaring cable cars
- an easy bus ride back to town
It’s the perfect loop: thrilling on the way up, dazzling at the top, and serene on the way down.
Towering over Lucerne, at 2,128 meters, Pilatus is Lucerne’s legendary “Dragon Mountain,” where myths meet alpine beauty. But what makes this excursion so special is the way you get there.
The Golden Round Trip isn’t just about the summit, it’s the adventure of the journey itself.

Let’s Talk The Highlights
When you leave Lucerne, you will be soaking up the best Switzerland offers.
A scenic boat ride across Lake Lucerne sets the stage, surrounded by rolling green hills and jagged alpine peaks. This is an easy start to the day as the boat leaves right from the Lucerne train station.
At the end, Alpnachstad, the experience suddenly shifts from tranquil to thrilling as you board the cogwheel railway, which slowly makes its way up the mountainside at an astonishing 48% gradient. It’s not just a train ride, it’s a feat of engineering that delivers jaw-dropping views at every turn.

When you finally reach the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic vistas across the Alps, with Lake Lucerne glimmering far below. You can louge about on the viewing terraces, or tackle some of the short hikes to higher lookout points, or simply soak in the mythical atmosphere of Pilatus Kulm.
The descent is just as memorable: step into the futuristic Dragon Ride aerial cableway and glide down into the valley, followed by panorama gondolas that carry you peacefully to Kriens.
From there, a short bus ride returns you to Lucerne, completing the loop.

The Journey Step by Step

From Lucerne to Alpnachstad by boat
Boats depart right across the street from Lucerne’s train station, with regular departures during the season. Just be aware that the season runs from around mid-May to mid-October, and otherwise, you have to do the Silver Round Trip, which uses the train instead of the boat.

The one-hour cruise gives you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and settle into the trip’s rhythm.
Up to Pilatus Kulm on the cogwheel railway

Want To Save This For Later?
From Alpnachstad, the red cogwheel train awaits. This is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, and the climb is as exhilarating as it is scenic.

The journey lasts about 30 minutes, but you’ll remember it for a lifetime
Exploring the summit

At the top, you’re greeted by expansive terraces and walking trails. The views stretch across central Switzerland and deep into the Alps. On clear days, you might even spot 70+ mountain peaks. The summit also offers restaurants, hotels, and further down the mountain – on the way down, are some more fun family activities like the summer toboggan run.

Descending by cable car and gondola

On the way down, switch to the “Dragon Ride” cable car, which feels almost like flying as you soar above the cliffs. Sure, it’s not for the faint of heart, but most of you will love it!

The ride continues with smaller gondolas drifting down to Kriens, offering one last chance to admire the lake and city below.
Return to Lucerne by bus

From the Kriens gondola station, it’s a short walk down to the main road, where you can hop on local bus line 1 for a quick 10-minute ride back to the heart of Lucerne.
Tips for Making the Most of It
- The full loop takes 4–6 hours, depending on how long you stay at the top, and if you spend time at the activities at Frakmunteggg.
- The round trip operates seasonally (mid-May to mid-October) when the boat and cogwheel train are running.
- Swiss Travel Pass holders get free travel on the boat and bus, plus a 50% discount on the cogwheel and cableways.
- Tickets on the cogwheel can sell out on busy summer days, so if possible, reserve a seat in advance.
