What Does A Day In Lauterbrunnen Cost?

Staubbach falls, lauterbrunnen

Ever wondered what it actually costs to spend a day in Lauterbrunnen?

After all, Switzerland is certainly not cheap!

This little alpine village is famous for its jaw-dropping waterfalls, cozy cafés, and access to some of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain adventures.

But what does it all add up to?

From trains and cable cars to snacks with a view, here’s a look at what a typical day in Lauterbrunnen might cost you.

Transport & Mountains

Transport is one of the most significant costs when visiting any of the mountains in Switzerland. So, let’s break it down.

The Schilthorn

If you want to do my favorite day out in Lauterbrunnen (I have a complete guide on it), then the fantastic views, fun cliff walk, and James Bond Museum have lured you to the Schilthorn! But what will it cost you?

The following are the prices for a return trip from either Stechelberg (the bottom) or Mürren.

If you want to save a little bit, you can go just partway up to the cliff walk at Birg and still get a decent view.

To Mürren

View from Mürren

Mürren is on a lot of people’s list because of its stunning clifftop location, fun transport to get there (gondola and train), and cute (mostly car-free) Swiss mountain town vibes!

It is often included in many train passes because it is a town and not a mountain. So, for many of you, it will be free or quite cheap to get there.

Keep in mind, there are two ways to Mürren (👉👉 this is all described and mapped in my guide):

  • Via gondola from the train station to Grütschalp, then via train to the north end of Mürren
  • Via bus to Stechelberg (at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley) then via Gondola up to Mürren

The price from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren (and back) is as follows:

Train From Various Locations

The cost of getting to Lauterbrunnen will vary greatly depending on where you are staying (and you have lots of options). But in general, this is not one of the big costs on this day out.

Food & Drinks

There are lots of options for eating out while in the valley, from Lauterbrunnen itself to Mürren, the Schilthorn, or simply bringing your own food for the day.

Here are some example costs to give you a ballpark figure to work from:

Restaurants

See my time-lapse of the rotating restaurant at the Schilthorn! 😱

It’s hard to pin down exact costs, because what and where we eat varies a lot, but here are some examples:

  • Salad – 8 – 15 CHF
  • Pizza – 15-25 CHF
  • Pasta – 15 – 30 CHF
  • Rösti (like Hashbrowns) 25 CHF
  • Mains (meat etc) – 30-50 CHF

Drinks are also not cheap, but if you do it right, you don’t have to spend a fortune:

  • Beer & Softdrink/Soda: 5-8 CHF
  • Wine: – 7-10 CHF per glass (Bottles 25+)
  • Coffee: 5-6 CHF

Here are some menus for you to take a look at for prices:

Bring Your Own (Supermarket Food)

migros supermarket

With their ready-made sandwiches, wraps, meal bowls, hot-food counters, bakery, and cheap drinks, buying your food at the big supermarkets is a great way to avoid spending big on lunch. Especially if you have breakfast included in your hotel.

Here are some rough costs for food at Coop and Migros supermarkets

  • Coop Sandwiches – 6-8 CHF
  • Migros Full Hot Chicken (takeaway) – 11 CHF+
  • Croissants & Bread Rolls – 2-3 CHF each
  • Takeaway Salads – 8-10 CHF
  • Loaf of Bread – 3-5 CHF
  • Salami or Ham – 5-6 CHF
  • Block of Cheese – 5-7 CHF
  • Can of Soda – 1-2 CHF
  • Bottle of Soda – 1-2 CHF
  • Water – DO NOT buy bottled water READ THIS

So, you can grab something takeaway, or even just assemble a picnic with salami, ham, fruit/veg and buy yourself a Swiss Army Knife (and keep it in your pack – just put it in your checked luggage when you go home, else you will get it confiscated).
