Switzerland may be in the heart of Europe, but it is not in the European Union.
This means there are a few things you need to watch out for. Things that can trip you up big time if you are not careful>
Can You Use Euros In Switzerland?
The Swiss Franc (CHF) rules here, and while you can sometimes spend Euros, it often comes with a nasty catch.
First let’s look at where you can use Euros in Switzerland:
- Big shops and department stores
- Major cities and tourist towns
- Popular museums and attractions.

Just be aware that it is not a great idea to use Euros in Switzerland because there are also a few downsides.
Downsides Of Using Euros In Switzerland
Before you use your Euros in Switzerland, consider these nasty downsides:
- You will be given change in Swiss Francs, which might not help if you are heading back to Europe
- They will use a very horrible exchange rate, so you will lose a lot of money
What To Do Instead Of Using Euros In Switzerland
Instead of using Euros in Switzerland, I would do any or all of the following instead:
- Use your credit card to make all your purchases and payments (it is rare they are not accepted, except Amex)
- Get some Swiss Francs cash from an ATM with your home debit card or, worst case, credit card (often less favorable)
- Get an account and credit card from Wise.com, which has the best rates and free cash withdrawals from ATMs (I use them all the time when I travel).
