Geneva Airport
For most people, the closest airport to Zermatt is Geneva International Airport. Geneva Airport has the most flights and options for travelers coming in from all over Europe and internationally.
Once you get to Geneva Airport you can easily drive or catch the train to Zermatt.
From Geneva Airport By Train
To get to Zermatt by train from Geneva Airport takes around 4 hours. You have to change once in Visp to get on the local Zermatt train that takes you up the Mattertal to the town.
From Geneva Airport By Car
Traveling by car to Zermatt from Geneva Airport is a little faster. However, keep in mind you cannot drive directly to Zermatt. First, you have to drive to Täsch which takes 2 hours 45 min. Then you have to park your car in the large Täsch car park. From there, you take a local train for 15 minutes to Zermatt, which is a car-free village.

Zurich Airport
Although Zurich Airport may seem further from Zermatt than Geneva Airport, it takes around the same time by train (perhaps even 15-25 minutes less with a good connection). The only challenge can be that you have to change trains perhaps one more time in Zurich if you don’t get the most efficient connection.
By car, it is also a similar distance and time, but you may get stuck in more traffic around Bern, or waste more time taking the Lötschberg tunnel. This is because it is not a car tunnel. Instead, you have to load your car onto a train which only leaves a few times an hour.
Sion Airport
Sion Airport is actually the closest airport to Zermatt, however, it does not have many flights coming into it. A few flights come from larger cities like Rome and London, but most are from smaller places like Mallorca, Calvi, Figari, and Alghero.
If you do manage to get to Sion Airport, it is only around 2 hours by train to get to Zermatt. To Täsch from Sion Airport is only just over an hour.
Is it easier to get to Zermatt from Geneva or Zurich?
There are faster train connections from Zurich than Geneva. It takes 3 hours 30 minutes compared to 4 hours to get to Zermatt. Driving time is similar, however, there is more chance of traffic jams coming from Zurich Airport.
Where do you fly to ski in Zermatt?
Most people choose to fly to Geneva to ski in Zermatt, however, you can just as easily fly into Zurich Airport.
