Welcome to Mürren!
If you want world-class Alpine views without a grueling uphill climb or long hike, this is the iconic walk to do.
It’s almost entirely downhill, completely paved, and feels less like a hike and more like strolling through a living Swiss postcard.
But don’t let the word “easy” fool you; there is a bit of a catch that your knees and your stroller need to know about before you set off! More on that later…
Where & When
- Where: You start in the car-free mountain village of Mürren and end in the sleepy farming hamlet of Gimmelwald.
- When: Late May through October is peak season for lush green fields and wildflowers. Because it’s a paved access road, it’s often cleared and accessible in the winter, too!
📊 The Quick Stats
| Feature | Details |
| ⏱️ Time | 45 to 60 minutes (depending on how often you stop to snap photos) |
| 📏 Length | ~2.5 km (1.5 miles) |
| 🟢 Difficulty | Easy terrain – it’s a road, but a consistently steep downhill gradient |
| 🥾 Trail Condition | Smooth paved asphalt road, entirely car-free |

🎒 Why It’s Worth It
The Payoff: Once you hit Gimmelwald, reward your tired quads with a cold drink at the Mountain Hostel before hopping on the cable car back down to the valley floor.
Want To Save This For Later?
The Views: You’re staring right at the massive peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau the entire way down.
The Vibe: You’ll pass classic Swiss chalets, hear the literal chime of cowbells, and maybe even spot a backyard honesty shop selling local alpine cheese.
⚠️ Read This Before You Go!
While the path is perfectly smooth (it’s a road) with no rocks or roots to trip over, it drops about 270 meters (nearly 900 feet) in a short distance. It is a continuous, relentless descent. So, I just wanted to warn you as some have said it was not fun for them.
🦵 The Knee Factor
If you have sensitive joints, this walk will test them. Walking continuously downhill requires a lot of “braking” with your quads, which puts heavy pressure on your kneecaps. If you’re prone to knee pain, bringing trekking poles is highly recommended to take the weight off your knees, or you can just take the cable car down instead!

👶 The Stroller Warning
Yes, this trail is paved and technically stroller-friendly. However, because of the constant steep incline, gravity will try to turn your stroller into a runaway train.
- Brakes are an absolute must: you will be actively holding back the stroller’s weight the entire way down. Having a stroller with a hand brake is an absolute lifesaver here.
- Safety Strap: Always wear the safety wrist strap so the stroller can’t roll away if you let go for a second to take a photo with your phone.
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on the sky! Paragliders love launching from Mürren, so you’ll likely see them floating right over your head as you walk down.

Silly question, but going in reverse is it crazy steep? Do you know elevation change?? Thanks!!
If you like uphill walks, then go for it. Quite the exercise – at least 270 meters height difference
