Strategic July Budget Tips
- The Zug Youth Hostel: Even though Zug is a wealthy city, its Youth Hostel is one of the most modern and affordable in the country. If you can’t find space in Lucerne, this is the #1 alternative.
- Bellpark Hostel (Kriens): In July, this is one of the first places to sell out. It’s effectively “in” Lucerne (just a short bus ride) but at hostel prices.
- Visitor Card Caveat: Staying in Kriens or Meggen usually qualifies you for the Lucerne Visitor Card. However, staying in Zug or Stans (different cantons) typically does not. Factor in the cost of a train ticket (roughly CHF 10–15 return) when comparing prices.
- Late Night Trains: Trains run late (until approx. 00:30), but always check the SBB app. A late-night taxi back to Stans or Alpnach can cost over CHF 60, instantly wiping out your hotel savings!
