Bergün is a village in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Up to 2018, Bergün was also a municipality, but then it merged with Filisur to create the new Bergün Filisur municipality. The village is surrounded by gorgeous nature including many mountain peaks, rivers, and even lakes.

Switzerland’s largest nature park (Parc Ela) is also very close to Bergün, and definitely a place worth exploring if you’re staying somewhere in the area. Bergün is known for excellent (winter) hiking trails, fishing opportunities, ski pistes, cross-country ski trails, and pretty much anything else that can be done under the blue skies. It’s an excellent destination for all outdoor lovers, and you won’t regret planning a trip to this village if you enjoy being outside and exploring natural attractions.

The lovely village is very popular with families in the winter thanks to a variety of fun things to do once the temperatures drop and snow covers the ground. Skiing, ice skating, curling, winter hiking, sledding, and snowshoeing are all popular winter activities in Bergün, and they’re suitable for travelers of all ages.

The ski areas near the village boast trails of varying difficulties, with options for expert, intermediate, and beginner skiers. There’s even a ski school for children and adults who have no prior experience with skiing, and it’s excellent for all beginners.

Several cross-country ski trails also pass through the Bergün Filisur municipality and they’re all pretty simple. The shortest trail takes only about 20 minutes to complete, while you’ll need to set apart some three hours for the longest one.

Every winter near the Bergün school an ice field is set up. It’s absolutely perfect for ice skating and curling, and all other fun activities on ice. The ice rink is free to use, but it’s worth noting that skaters get access to about half the rink since the other half is reserved for the Bergün curling club.

Even though Bergün village attracts the most visitors in the winter season thanks to excellent winter sports opportunities, it’s not exactly deserted in the summer either. Once the snow melts and the temperatures rise enough for comfortable days outside, the village and its surroundings become popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and other adventures who just want to explore the gorgeous nature of Switzerland.

Hiking, mountain biking, golfing, trekking, fishing, and camping are all popular things that travelers do when they visit Bergün in the summer. The village is surrounded by spectacular nature that features lakes, rivers, and mountains, so there really is plenty to discover if you want to get out and explore.

Getting to Bergün

The easiest way of traveling to Bergün is just driving, but it is possible to reach the village by public transport. Bergün is serviced by a train station with direct connections to Samedan, Chur, and even St. Moritz. The village is about an hour and 15 minutes away from Chur, a town with train connections to all the major cities in Switzerland (If you are also interested in visiting Chur, here are some of the best things that you can do in the town).

Bergün is only two and a half hours away from Zurich with just one train change in Chur, so you can get to the village rather easily even if you’re not very close. The village is also serviced by bus lines 591 and 592, which are an alternative way of traveling to the village.

Riding the bus is a good option if you’re fairly close to Bergün and you want to save some money on public transport fares since bus tickets are generally not as expensive as train tickets in Switzerland. The bus line 591 operates between Bergün and Stugl, while the 592 line operates from Bergün/Bravuogn to Tuors Chants. The bus is a better option for exploring the surroundings of the village and reaching trailheads more easily, but it’s not the ideal solution for traveling directly to Bergün.

Restaurants in Bergün

Most of the restaurants in Bergün are in the hotels in the village, so you’ll likely eat most meals at your accommodation. Because of that, it’s not a bad idea to pay extra for half-board service, because it will end up being cheaper than paying for meals separately.

Bäckerei Café Preisig is a bakery in the center of the village where you can grab snacks, desserts, and pastries, but you can’t really get a proper, cooked meal here. They do have a great selection of Swiss cheeses, so be sure to at least check out what they have when you’re in Bergün.

Eisbar Bergün is a good place for a drink in the winter. The bar is set up near the village center every winter and it is covered entirely in ice, for a very special experience.

Where to Stay in Bergün

Bergün has a surprisingly large number of hotels and private apartments for a village its size. You can choose from a variety of accommodation options, which range from a modest apartment to a hotel with a large pool and spa center.

Hotel Weissez Kreuz is one of the best hotels in the village. It’s got a tradition that dates back to the 16th century, so in addition to staying in clean and spacious rooms, you get to experience a good chunk of the history of this village. This hotel has different rates for the summer and winter seasons, but it’s worth noting that the price difference is just 5-10 CHF per room (cheaper in summer). The rates are from 95-110 CHF for a single room, and 80-90 CHF per person/night for a double room.

Consider also the Kurhaus Bergün with its modern rooms, an entire spa house with a pool, and even a movie theater. The rates for rooms are this hotel are 85-95 CHF for the smallest single rooms, and 160-240 CHF for double rooms, which is a pretty fair rate considering all the different amenities and facilities this fabulous hotel offers.
