Both Basel and Geneva are serviced by large international airports, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding plane tickets to either city. Geneva has a train station at the airport and you can be in the heart of the city in only 7 minutes.
Basel, on the other hand, does not have a train connection to its central city area. There are buses that transport passengers to and from the airport, and the journey is only 20-30 minutes long, depending on where exactly you’re heading in Basel. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means, but it is a slight inconvenience worth mentioning.

It’s no secret that Geneva is one of the most expensive cities in the world, but funnily enough, the consumer prices in Geneva are actually lower than in Basel. It’s rent prices that make Geneva so wildly expensive for residents, but most other things in the city are not that much more expensive than in the rest of Switzerland.
Expect to spend a similar amount of money whether you’re staying in Geneva or Basel. You might spend a few francs less on accommodation in Basel, but the overall travel costs even out when you consider public transportation tickets, meal costs, drinks, and tickets to tourist attractions. Although Basel might be slightly more affordable overall, most of its popular attractions have entrance fees, whereas Geneva has a lot of places tourists can visit for free.
Basel vs Geneva: Best Time To Visit
Any time of the year is a great time to visit either of these cities. I would say that Geneva is the best destination for summer trips, simply because you can take advantage of the beaches on Lake Geneva and spend your days swimming and sunbathing. On the other hand, Basel also offers swimming in the Rhine River, but it’s a very different experience from swimming in the lake.
Another thing to consider is that summer is the busiest season in both cities. If you would give up on swimming to skip the crowds, then consider a visit in the shoulder season. Spring and autumn are beautiful seasons in both Geneva and Basel, and they see fewer crowds than the months of June, July, and August.
Winter is also a good time to visit either city, especially if you can manage a trip in mid/late December. That’s when the Christmas markets are set up in the cities, as well as countless decorations and fairy lights. It’s truly a special time in both Basel and Geneva, with options for open-air ice skating, mulled wine, street food, and more.
Basel vs Geneva: Which Is Better?
I don’t think it’s fair to Geneva or Basel to say it’s just worse than the other city. Both are special in their own way, with unique landmarks and attractions for visitors.
Geneva is an international, lakeside city that offers modern architecture, fabulous shopping, excellent museums, beaches, and beautiful views. It’s also the better destination for longer stays in Switzerland because there are so many gorgeous towns along the shore of Lake Geneva that you can (and should) visit on day trips – Nyon, Morges, Lausanne, Montreux, Vevey, etc.
Basel, on the other hand, is more Swiss in essence. It’s more representative of the culture and traditions of Switzerland, although I have to point out that Basel is also a very international city. It’s also the cultural capital of the country with too many art museums and galleries to count, as well as the home of Art Basel.
In the end, the best destination in Switzerland for you depends on your personal preference. But no matter which of these two cities you choose, I don’t doubt you will have a great time!
