Interlaken, nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, is a summer paradise for many. However, to ensure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons, be mindful of these common tourist mistakes:
1. Overlooking Mandatory Reservations

Although most things don’t and should not be reserved, a few things have changed this year due to the large number of visitors enjoying Switzerland’s stunning scenery!
Jungfraujoch Seat Reservations
From May to August, seat reservations for the Jungfraujoch train are mandatory. This ensures you have a guaranteed spot on the train during peak season.
👉👉 You can book your seat reservation here.
Oeschinensee Time Slot Bookings
Starting May 2025, visitors to Lake Oeschinen must reserve a time slot for the cable car ascent. This system aims to manage visitor flow and protect the natural environment.
👉👉 Secure your time slot here.
2. Underestimating the Mountain Weather

Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. While summer days can be warm, mornings and evenings often bring chills, and sudden rain showers are common.
And if you come in the shoulder season, snow is a possibility too. (even in summer, sometimes)
Tip: Dress in layers and always carry a light rain jacket and a warmer layer. Check out my packing list recommendations here.
3. Skipping the Jungfraujoch Due to Cost

While the journey to Jungfraujoch isn’t cheap, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience offering unparalleled views. If it fits within your budget, it’s highly recommended.
There is year-round snow, fun activities, spectacular views and a once in a lifetime train ride right through the Eiger mountain!
Tip: Always check the weather forecast before booking to ensure clear views.
4. Not Getting Up Early For Those Busy Activities & Places
The interlaken region is busy. Especially in peak season (summer). So, don’t laze about in bed til 9am and stay up all night partying.
Instead, get to those popular places and activities as soon as possible to avoid the lines and crowds and get those epic early morning shots.

Places to watch out for including:
- Jungfraujoch
- Grindelwald First (especially the ziplines)
- Oeschinensee Lake
5. Limiting Yourself to Tourist Hotspots

While attractions like Harder Kulm and Jungfraujoch are popular for a reason, don’t miss out on lesser-known hikes such as Schynige Platte or the lakes of Interlaken.
These spots offer stunning views with somewhat fewer crowds.
6. Overlooking Applicable Travel Passes

Switzerland’s public transport is efficient but can be pricey.
Investing in a Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass or Berner Oberland Regional Pass can provide unlimited travel on trains, boats, and cable cars, offering significant savings.
But figuring out which one (or ones) are applicable to your trip, whether they are worth it, and how to deal with the whole topic can be complex.

7. Assuming Late Operating Hours

Unlike what you may be used to at home, many shops and supermarkets close by 6 or 7 PM in smaller towns. And numerous restaurants stop serving food before 9 PM.
So, although Coop supermarket is open until 9pm in Interlaken it is only open until 6.30pm in Lauterbrunnen.
Tip: Plan your shopping and dining accordingly to avoid inconveniences. Check Google Maps or even better the local website for the exact opening times.
8. Underestimating Switzerland’s Cost of Living
Switzerland is known for its high prices. And areas like Interlaken are no cheaper than most big cities.
To manage costs:
- Groceries: Shop at COOP or Migros supermarkets for as many of your meals as you can.
- Water: Carry a refillable bottle; tap water is safe and delicious.
- Accommodation: Consider apartment rentals with kitchen facilities to prepare some of your meals.
By avoiding these common pitfalls, you’ll ensure a smoother and more enjoyable experience in and around Interlaken. Safe travels!
