Switzerland is renowned for its iconic destinations like the Matterhorn, Interlaken, and Lucerne. But beyond the postcard-famous attractions lies a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
These lesser-known locations offer just as much beauty and charm without the crowds.
Here are ten stunning places in Switzerland you’ve probably never heard of but absolutely need to visit.
1. St. Saphorin – Château de Chillon’s Charming Neighbor
While Château de Chillon and Montreux or Vevey often steal the spotlight, the charming village of St. Saphorin, perched along the shores of Lake Geneva, is an equally captivating destination.
Nestled in the heart of the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, St. Saphorin offers a blend of medieval architecture, cobbled streets, and spectacular lake views. It’s an ideal spot for wine tasting, leisurely walks, or simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance.
2. Creux du Van
Located in the Jura Mountains, Creux du Van is a natural amphitheater carved into the landscape by glacial erosion. This 160-meter-high cliff forms a stunning horseshoe shape and offers panoramic views of the surrounding forests and valleys. Spotting ibexes and chamois adds a touch of wildlife magic to this underrated destination.
I have hiked here twice, once from above, and once from below. And both were absolutely jaw-dropping. This image does not do it justice. You have to see it to believe it.
3. Viamala Gorge
Tucked away in Graubünden, the Viamala Gorge is a dramatic and narrow ravine carved by the Hinterrhein River. Walk across stone bridges and gaze down into turquoise waters rushing through towering rock walls. The gorge has been a passageway since Roman times, and its sheer beauty will leave you in awe.
4. Gelmerbahn & Lake
This hidden alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland is a true gem.

Accessible via the Gelmerbahn funicular—one of the steepest in Europe—it offers jaw-dropping views during the ride up. Once at the top, you’ll find a vivid turquoise lake surrounded by rugged mountain scenery, perfect for hiking or simply soaking in the beauty.
It is easily accessible in a day trip from Interlaken, and you can visit the Aare Gorge on the way too!
5. Val d’Anniviers
In the French-speaking region of Valais, Val d’Anniviers is an unspoiled valley dotted with charming villages like Grimentz and Zinal. This is one of my favorite valleys and is just next door to Zermatt, at least geographically!
With stunning 4000m peaks all around, nearby glaciers, top-notch skiing and typical Swiss towns around every corner, it is hard not to love!
6. Ruinaulta (Swiss Grand Canyon)
Switzerland has its very own “Grand Canyon” in the Rhine Gorge, or Ruinaulta is one of Switzerland’s most stunning gorges. Located in the Graubünden region, this dramatic gorge was formed by a massive landslide thousands of years ago. The landscape is best explored by taking a scenic train ride on the Rhaetian Railway or kayaking along the Rhine River.
7. Berggasthaus Aescher
Perched precariously on a cliff in the Appenzell region, Berggasthaus Aescher is one of Switzerland’s most unique mountain inns. Accessed via a short hike or cable car, this iconic spot offers a rustic yet unforgettable experience. Enjoy hearty Swiss cuisine with sweeping views of the rolling hills below.
