I spend a lot of time figuring out the best train pass for my clients.
After all, with all the different train passes available and discounts they provide, it can be almost impossible to figure it out on your own. Without spending weeks deep inside a spreadsheet!
That is why it was a pleasure to know that the Berner Oberland Pass existed. It was one of the best passes for visitors spending a lot of time in the Interlaken/Jungfrau Region.
Until now!

These Mountains Are No Longer Free OR Heavily Discounted

In 2024, you could travel to almost any mountain for free – except for
- Schilthorn
- Jungfraujoch
And even then you got a great discount. So, you could head up the following mountains for FREE (in 2024)
- Grindelwald First
- Harder Kulm
- Schynige Platte
- Kleine Scheidegg & Eigergletscher
- Dozens of others too (including Mannlichen, Murren, Wengen, Niesen, Niederhorn etc)
- Wilderswil – Schynige Platte
- Interlaken – Harder Kulm
- Grindelwald – First
What About The Schilthorn?

The Schilthorn was always the odd one out on the Berner Oberland Pass. Aside from the Jungfraujoch, which if we are honest, is never free, or even cheap really, the Schilthorn always stood out as a “problem child” when you had the Berner Oberland Pass.
That has all changed in 2025.
You can travel for FREE on the Schilthorn with the Berner Oberland pass as of 2025! How cool is that.
Especially since the new speedy, comfy, large gondolas are opening in March!

The Golden Pass Panoramic Train

Previously in 2024, you could only get to Saanen for FREE with the Berner Oberland Pass. The rest of the route to Montreux on the Golden Pass Line you had to pay for.
NOW, you can travel the whole way to Montreux for free with the Berner Oberland Pass.
Of course, you still need to pay for your seat reservation, like with any other panoramic train.
Extra Days Are Easy & Affordable
One of the great new additions to the pass in 2025 is the extra days option.
What is this exactly? Well, if you buy a pass and decide you want to stay longer, or wish your pass ran longer, you can now just extend it by 2 days. You can also plan this into your purchase so that if the weather turns, or your plans change, you are not locked into a longer pass.
** These extra 2 days can be added at any train station in the Berner Oberland area when you are in Switzerland.

Who Is The Berner Oberland Pass Good For in 2025?
With these changes to the Berner Oberland Pass I would say the pass is great for anyone not focused on the Jungfrau Region (Jungfraujoch, First, Schynige Platte, Harder Kulm).
If you are more focused on those mountains (owned by Jungfrau AG) then you should consider their pass – the Jungfrau Travel Pass.
